Conclusion

Dreams are the one and only thing that keep humans motivated to set and achieve their goals. Sub-concious dreams are what humans can use to escape from reality for a little while when life gets to much to handle. Conscious and sub-conscious dreams work together to make humans perform to their best ability possible. In most of my sources the ideas are contradicting because the two sides are subconscious and conscious which are completely opposite ideas. One of the sources that complimented one another was the media reflections about dreams. When the photo was of the woman sleeping and closing her eyes, as an audience you have no idea what could be going on in her head, but that is also the same as conscious dreaming. You may think you know someone, but their hopes and dreams could be completely contradicting of their personality. I think this project has inspired myself and hopefully the audience to really acknowledge their dreams and make them a reality. At the beginning of the tapestry I wanted to find out what subconscious dreaming meant and why it happens but now I know that it should not be questioned, but instead embraced. To finally conclude, I think a world without dreams would be like being in a desert without water; absolutely un-bearable. Life can be hard at times but dreams can keep you going and can really help you take the oppurunity to turn your life around once and for all. So take the challenge, follow your dreams because you never know what may come out of them.

"That night I dreamed about the boy. It was raining. He was running on the beach  and people were chasing him, throwing stones at him and calling him names, Gyppo! Thief! Dirty pervert! There were hundreds of them, brandishing sticks and lead pipes, shovels and rocks, whatever they could lay their hands on, their nightmare faces gripped with hate and streaked with tears of rain, Dirty gyppo! Dirty bastard! Jamie Tait was there, oiled, in his too-tight swimming trunks. Angel and Robbie were there. Lee Brendell, Bill, Dominic, Deefer, Simon, Dad, everyone from the island was there, all storming across the beach, screaming out for blood... and I was there too. I was with them. I was running with the mob."

Cait had this dream right after a really bad day. She had gone out to the town with Bill, Robbie, Angel and some others, and she really doesn't like hanging around witht that crowd. Bill, her long time friend, only wants to do drugs and drink lately, and hang around with a bunch of scums. This dream represents how scared Cait is to hang around with those type of people and be exactly like them. When it said, "I was running with the mob." it reperesented Cait becoming just like the scums. This shows how sleeping dreams can take on a different form and be how your life is in the past present or future. It shows how dreams can show your deepest fears, insecurities and emotions, just like Cait's dream.

THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN:
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is all about a boy named Arnold who lives on an Indian reserve and has one of the worst lives you could imagine. Money is low, education is poor, and alcoholism is high. Arnold is sick and tired of living like this, and he wants a brand new life. He decideds he wants to go to school at Reardan High School, an all white high school where education is amazing. When he tells people on the reserve about his new plan, they only put him down. Arnold keeps his head held high, follows his dreams and accomplishes them. He not only becomes a well educated individual, he also makes life long friends and discovers a love for basketball. This goes to show how much your life can turn around by simply following your dreams.

Dreamer (K'naan)
The song dreamer is an excellent example of concious dreaming. It shows how much dreams can help a person out in life, and aid them through their problems and struggles. The very first line of the song, Yeah believe it or not, what kept me alive is my dreams, definately represented a good form of concious dreaming. It even goes to the extremes of life or death situations. If you are ever in a situation like K'naan was, where your life is so horrible and you live in poverty, the only thing you have to dwell on is your dreams. Your dreams could save your life.

Sleeping Beauty
In the photo sleeping beauty, the young woman looks completely at peace and is taking on the sterotypical image of dreaming. Her eyes are closed and she looks like nothing could disturb her. Behind that image, anything could be going on in her head. Images flashing before her eyes, and a variety of feelings being expressed. All her sub-concious thoughts are going on in this photo, even though we may not realise it as the audience. Dreams are a very mysterious and surreal thing, that may never be completely understood. That is why I think this photo is such a good representation of dreams, because the outside seems calm and peaceful while the inside could be anything at all.

This poem by William Shakespeare, represents the quote by Erich Fromm, which talked about how some dreams occur deep within our souls, without even realising it. When Shakespeare said in this sonnet, For all the day they view things unrespected; But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee. This quote shows how during the day we think and see things in such a controlled way, but when we finally fall asleep our true thoughts show, and our dreams are more vivid and exciting than anything we could think of when we are conscious.

This poem by Doctor Seuss is from a children's novel Horton Hears a Who. It is about an elephant who strongly believed in saving a small community, and although the rest of the jungle made fun of him and mocked him, it was Horton's dream and he stuck to it. By the end of the story, Horton saved the small community and kept all the whos alive. This poem goes hand-in-hand with the quote by Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King strongly believed that one day blacks and whites would be equal, and his dream came true, just like Horton's.

Short Stories

Bearing Up- Sleeping Dreams
The short story Bearing Up by Matt Hughes is about a boy named Mike, who ever since he was a young child, is having dreams about various animals chasing him. By the time he is 15 years old he is still having these dreams but it is always a bear chasing him. As the story progresses you learn that Mike's father works for the Canadian forces flying squadrons and jet trainers, rescuing people who are in trouble. It is a very dangerous job, and although Mike doesn't like to admit it, he gets scared when his father goes on missions. This story shows how the things going on in your life can take on a different form and be represented in your dreams. In Mike's case the bear chasing him represented his fear for his father's life. By the end of the story Mike's father gets in alot of trouble stranded by himself, in a near death experience. Finally, to Mike's relief, his father comes home safe and sound. Mike never had another dream about the bear ever again.

The First Day- Hopes and Dreams
The story The First Day by Edward P. Jones is about a single mother who is poor and illiterate. Her whole life she has gone to church with her young daughter and would point to the school across the street and tell her daughter that is where she would go to learn. Finally, that day came but, they were told by the stuck up Secretary she couldn't go to that school because they didn't live in the right area of town. Her mother's dreams got slightly shut down, but she still did not give up. The mother took her daughter to the 'right' school and enrolled her there, even though she wanted her at the other school. All the mother's life she wanted her daughter to have a good education and unlike her, learn to read and write. Her mother didn't give up on that dream and stayed strong even when she was shut down, and that dream still came true. This story gave the reader hope, and taught that dreams are vital to goals coming true.

The first quote by Martin Luther King Jr. represents conscious dreaming. It goes to show that if you strongly believe in something and let your hopes and dreams take over the current reality, they may someday become reality. His dream came true and is still living on today. The second quote by Erich Fromm represents subconscious dreaming. In my opinion, I strongly agree with this quote because anything you dream while you are asleep, could quite possibly be the thoughts that take place deep inside your soul.

Why Abenaki Legend Describes Dreams

I chose this legend because it really made me think about dreams, and their meaning. It has been said that what happens in your dreams can turn into reality. At the end of the legend it stated, "we must not question our dreams for they are our creation"(Native American Legends). I believe that many subconcious dreams we have are very important and could mean something to our lives, while our conscious dreams are even more important and could turn into our very own creation. This legend also shows how dreams have been around from generation to generation, which I also believe is true. The purpose of this project is to really show the difference between conscious and sub conscious dreams, but show how important both of the subjects are. I really want to inspire the audience to take action on their goals and dreams in order to have more positive outcomes in their lifetime. I would like to better understand the sub-conscious dreams that take place in our lives and why they happen and what they mean.

An Abenaki Legend

The Great Spirit, in a time not known to us looked about and saw nothing. No colors, no beauty. Time was silent in darkness. There was no sound. Nothing could be seen or felt. The Great Spirit decided to fill this space with light and life.
From his great power he commanded the sparks of creation. He ordered Tôlba, the Great Turtle to come from the waters and become the land. The Great Spirit molded the mountains and the valleys on turtle's back. He put white clouds into the blue skies. He was very happy.He said, "Everything is ready now. I will fill this place with the happy movement of life."He thought and thought about what kind of creatures he would make.
Where would they live? What would they do? What would their purpose be? He wanted a perfect plan. He thought so hard that he became very tired and fell asleep.
His sleep was filled with dreams of his creation. He saw strange things in his dream. He saw animals crawling on four legs, some on two. Some creatures flew with wings, some swam with fins. There were plants of all colors, covering the ground everywhere. Insects buzzed around, dogs barked, birds sang, and human beings called to each other. Everything seemed out of place. The Great Spirit thought he was having a bad dream. He thought, nothing could be this imperfect.
When the Great Spirit awakened, he saw a beaver nibbling on a branch. He realized the world of his dream became his creation. Everything he dreamed about came true. When he saw the beaver make his home, and a dam to provide a pond for his family to swim in, he then knew every thing has it's place and purpose in the time to come.
It has been told among our people from generation to generation. We must not question our dreams. They are our creation.

Dreams: Introduction

When you are sleeping, images flash before your eyes, stories played out that are completely random, yet make perfect sense. They can send you screaming and crying into the night, laughing and waking up in a good mood, or seeming so realistic that when you snap back to reality it can be upsetting or relieving. When awake, images still flash before your eyes, so dazed and away from reality that you might as well be sleeping. They could also be very realistic and improve your life beyond imaginable. They can be goals you set for the future, or ways you can repair your past. No matter how much we may want to ignore it, or embrace it, dreams are a part of our everyday lives. They can shape us, or they can break us. Hopes and dreams are what keep some people sane. Sleeping dreams are what can make some people insane. This amazing phenomenon has been around ever since humans walked the earth. Dreams, whether awake or asleep, are not going anywhere.
